In 1924, it was renumbered 4472 and officially named the Flying Scotsman, after the London/Edinburgh rail service. In 1934, the Flying Scotsman reached a speed of 100 mph—the first locomotive ever to achieve such a speed. The Flying Scotsman was decommissioned in 1963 after 40 successful years of service.
