Larsen

Company owner Lars Andreas Larsen first established a printing company in Flekkefjord, Norway, in 1947. In 1952, his son Pål received a gift from his aunt in America – a sturdy cardboard puzzle. His parents noticed that he played with it a lot, unlike other, lower-quality puzzles. At that time, there were few high-quality toys in Norwegian stores, so Larsen decided to make puzzles himself. The first one was made in the basement of his family home a year later. Among other things, he used an old sewing machine for slippers. Until the early 1960s, the company mainly produced puzzles for other companies, but later began to create its own product line. The company's name changed several times, but in 1990 they finally decided on Larsen, after the founder's surname, as this word is easy to pronounce even outside Scandinavia. In 1975, a factory was built, which was expanded in 1988 and 1993. Many of the production machines are specific, made directly for Larsen and their puzzles. The company employs eight people, including the founder's son, his wife Jonna, and his son Lars Kristian. The company's philosophy remains the same as it was more than 60 years ago. A quality puzzle must be made of sturdy cardboard so that children can easily grasp it and so that it will last a long time. The puzzle's illustrations must be appropriate for the intended age group and number of pieces. The puzzle must have a frame into which children can insert the pieces, making play and storage hassle-free. It is better for children to have simpler puzzles that they can put together again and again than complicated puzzles that may test their patience. When putting the puzzle together again, children will remember the shapes of the pieces and their positions. That is why it is important for the puzzle to have many pieces of different shapes. Recognizing puzzle pieces builds on recognizing other shapes – letters and numbers. Larsen offers more than 400 different puzzles, some of which are produced with text in up to 30 different languages. They pride themselves on ensuring that their products are not only beautiful, but also educational and entertaining, so that children want to play with them again and again. It helps the youngest children develop their motor skills. Older children gain new knowledge while putting the puzzle together. Children practice patience and concentration. The puzzle is made in Europe.
