At the end of the 1960s, Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) requested a new six-axle freight locomotive that would improve the competitiveness of railways compared to road transport. This locomotive was intended to supplement and further develop the 150 series locomotives delivered since the 1950s and to accelerate heavy freight transport with a higher speed of 120 km/h. Between 1972 and 1978, a total of 170 Class 151 locomotives were put into service, initially based in Hagen and Nuremberg. In 1994, the Class 151 locomotives were assigned to DB Cargo. The 151 series locomotives have since been sold to private railway companies and continue to be used in freight transport.
