The most important representative of the V 160 series locomotives is the 218 series diesel-electric locomotive. After 12 pre-series machines, series locomotives were delivered by Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei, and MaK in four slightly different production series from 1971 onwards. These locomotives, which reach speeds of up to 140 km/h and have an output of up to 2,800 hp, are used in both passenger and freight transport. The 218 series locomotives have undergone several color changes over the years. The first machines were delivered in the usual purple-red paint scheme for diesel locomotives. From 1975, the appearance of the locomotives was determined by a combination of blue and beige colors.
