In the 1970s, the then Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a great need for high-performance freight train diesel locomotives for medium-heavy shunting and track service. In the course of this, the lighter T 466.2 variant was derived from the T 448 industrial locomotive. From 1977, it was manufactured by ČKD in Prague in nine series (each with minor differences) of 494 units and was in service with ČSD until 1986. In 1998, the serial designation T 466.2 was changed to 742.
