In the 1970s, the then Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a high demand for powerful diesel locomotives for freight trains, designed for medium-heavy shunting and track service. As part of this, a lighter variant, the T 466.2, was derived from the T 448 industrial locomotive series. From 1977, it was manufactured by ČKD in Prague in nine production series (with minor differences between them) in a total number of 494 units and was put into service by ČSD until 1986.
