In 1912, the then Imperial and Royal Private Company of the Southern Railway ordered a tank locomotive for heavy passenger transport to replace the 229 series locomotives, which had become too underpowered. The State Railway Company's locomotive factory then developed the 629 series superheated steam locomotive as the world's first tank locomotive with a Pacific 2'C1' wheel arrangement. The first 629 was delivered to the Southern Railway Company in 1913, followed by another 14 in a total of three delivery series over the next two years. The extremely positive experience with this series prompted the Imperial and Royal State Railways to purchase 25 almost identical locomotives by the end of the monarchy in 1918. After World War I, fifteen South Railway locomotives and ten State Railway locomotives remained in Austria. Fifteen locomotives had to be transferred to the newly founded ČSD company, which designated them as 354.121 to 135.
